Vancouver, British Columbia – DJ Coco Fresh is no stranger when it comes to music. She has been influenced by her mother’s motown/oldies collection; her father’s natural gift for creating music as a drummer and guitarist and her older sister’s introducing her to hip hop, r&b, reggae, pop, soca & more. Being intrigued with how Flipout and Jay Swing dj’ed on ‘The World Wide Ride’ in 1999, Coco proceeded to listen to these DJs and that’s when her creativity transpired. At 13 with no access to two turntables or a mixer Coco Fresh made substitutions by placing two cds flat on her dresser as records and two pencils as her volume control on her mixer while the eraser was her fader. With her creative set up she would pretend to DJ along with Flipout and Jay Swing. She did this weekly until she received her first pair of turntables with a mixer in hand. With every DJ there comes the time when you have to figure out what your stage name will be. With Coco Fresh it happened with the exchange of letters with her best friend, Grace. Coco Fresh’s mother gave her the nick name ‘Coco,’ Grace wrote a rap stating because Coco always has fresh kicks her stage name should be ‘DJ Coco Fresh,’ thus DJ Coco Fresh was born. Coco Fresh brings high energy while seamlessly creating mixes where she is able to spin all genres. She’ll hit you with a on the spot remix of Etta James, go into an electro set while blending some classic rock and if the feeling is right a set of soca and reggae music and possibly ending it with soulful house. You can pretty much except the unexpected when DJCoco Fresh is spinning. DJ'ing was first a hobby for Coco Fresh. As she grew older she took the craft more seriously where she started DJ'ing assemblies, dances and private parties throughout high school. Through the party circuit Coco Fresh met DJ Kemo, Flipout and Jay Swing. As they took notice of her they also gave her pointers on scratching and how to excel with her DJing. DJ Coco Fresh’s guidance and influence comes from some of Canada’s finest DJs; Starting From Scratch, Baby Yu, Wristpect, Atrak and Kap N Kirk. Prior to all of this, Coco Fresh would stay in her room, crank the music loud and practice DJing on vinyl. Her ultimate goal is to bring great music to people around the world; therefore, eventually being a tour DJ.
